Left
4 Dead 2 Hands-on demo at PAX! -
posted 9.7.09
We had the opportunity to play a hands-on of Valve's
Left 4 Dead 2 at this years Penny Arcade Expo here in Seattle
this past weekend. First off, thank you to Valve for the experience
and the very cool L4D2 shirt!
The level that we got to play was a lot different
from the screen shots that we've seen on Parish which takes place
on the streets of New Orleans in the daylight. The one we played
was entitled Dark Carnival and, you guessed it, takes place at
night in an abandoned (by the living) carnival grounds.
The theme in Dark Carnival is pretty ominous as
you make your way through tents, carousels and other theme park
junk. The zombies are also much different in this setting with
the introduction of costumed zombies like the Clown. He's no boss
character but it's fun as hell to aim for that red nose of his!
Another great introduction to the franchise is melee
weapons. I didn't get the chance to use the katana but I did get
to smash zombies in the face with a guitar which was pretty intense.
I burnt through my ammo pretty quickly and it was good to have
a hand-to-hand weapon to be able to dent some zombie skulls.
I did also get the unfortunate
chance to meet a few of the games new boss characters. The Jockey
is similar to the Hunter but he jumps onto your head and steers
you towards other zombies, you're ultimately helpless until a
teammate saves you. The other character we saw was the Spitter,
a zombie that spits toxic goo onto the ground and makes you take
damage if you walk over it.
I did manage to survive to
make it to the safehouse which ended the demo for us. We're excited
to see some of the new weapons that we've been hearing about like
the magnum and AK-47 as well as the other melee weapons which
really add a new whole new level of fun to the game. We'll be
sure to keep you posted about new developments in Left 4 Dead
as we come closer to the games release date of November 17th!

AMC
to sign development deal to produce a TV series based on The Walking
Dead comic! - posted
8.12.09
Variety has reported that the AMC TV network is
in plans to sign a deal that would allow them to adapt Robert
Kirkman's epic zombie saga The Walking Dead for television.
Some of the names mentioned in the discussions were
director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and
producer Gale Anne Hurd (Terminator).
“This is not about zombies popping out
of closets,” said AMC SVP of programming, Joel Stillerman
to Variety. “This is a story about survival, and the dynamics
of what happens when a group is forced to survive under these
circumstances. The world is portrayed in a smart, sophisticated
way.”
The Walking Dead series has been a rollercoaster
of action and emotions that I could see well adapted for TV if
done right. It sounds like they're talking to the right people.
Let's hope this gets done the right way.

Undead Anamnesis Call for Artists and Writers!
- posted 8.10.09
Nation Undead: Anamnesis is a new one-shot comic
anthology set in the same world as the Nation Undead outbreak/zombie
short film collection. The project is is being headed by Night
of the Living Dead: Reanimated curator Mike Schneider.
There is currently an open call for artists and
writers to submit stories and art for consideration in the anthology.
This is a very exciting opportunity as the Nation Undead project
and Night of the Living Dead Reanimated have a very healthy network
of creative people to associate with.
The stories of Anamnesis will adhere to the zoning
rules of Nation Undead which defines certain sections of the nation
in alternate stages of an outbreak. In addition, writers may opt
to tell a sort of prequel of how the infection came to afflict
the country as a whole.
The Rules
-Stories are to hold true to the universe established by Nation
Undead.
-Stories must be in English, well proofed, and lettering must
be easy to read.
-All comics should be no longer then 10 pages in length.
-All artwork is to be in black and white (gray tones are ok.)
-There are no restrictions on the style of art or tone of the
story.
-Explicit nudity, violence and gore is allowed if justified by
the story.
-Page Size/ Format: 6.625" x 10.25" (content safe: 5.5"
x 9.25") 300ppi JPG CMYK.
-Deadline is November 15th, 2009. (Must receive at least 10 quality
entries in order to proceed. If this minimum is not met, the creators
reserve the right to extend the timetable or cancel the publication.)
-Works are to be sent through Yousendit
to comic@nationundead.com.
Artists will be emailed a receipt confirming that the entry has
been received.

Zombie Handbook - New from Zombie Portraits Mastermind Rob Sacchetto!
- posted 8.3.09 @ 4pm
Robert Sacchetto, the brains
behind www.zombieportraits.com
has a new book out entitled: The Zombie Handbook.
The book acts as a humurous
field guide on how to identify the living dead and survive certain
scenarios.
Here's the description from
Amazon:
"The Zombie Handbook
reveals the vital information that [human] readers need to know
about identifying, understanding and, when things get ugly, dispatching
the "living dead."
This definitive study combs through every zombie-ological
subject, from feeding habits to favorite sexual positions. Of
course, the book's most important section is surviving and fighting
the brain-eaters when the inevitable zombie apocalypse arrives.
There's vital information on everything from weaponry and battling
techniques to booby traps and zombie-proofing a home.
Beginning with a fascinating historical retrospective
on the "living dead" and continuing with an in-depth
look at modern zombies, the book also addresses the crucial question
of the day—can human beings and zombies peacefully coexist?"

Book Review - Wayne Simmons' Drop Dead Gorgeous
- posted 7.13.09
Review by Jim Dodge Junior
"Drop Dead Gorgeous – Wayne Simmons (Permuted
Press)
We find ourselves in the mystical land of modern Ireland when
most of the population drops dead for no apparent reason; instantly.
Like, with no warning whatsoever. Survivors are caught off guard
and it takes a while for the initial shock to wear off. Once it
does, the breakdown in society allows chaos and carnage to ensue.
After a few weeks the living begin to notice that only some of
the dead are rotting. In fact, the hot chicks…er, attractive
women look more like they’re sleeping than deceased.
Wayne Simmons has written a great book with a cool new zombie
twist. Follow the bands of random survivors as they navigate a
crazy new world filled with the ravening, ravishingly beautiful
undead. It seems in Mr. Simmons’ head, beautiful girls owe
a little payback to the men who failed to treat them right. Well,
in Drop Dead Gorgeous, they get their chance! And it’s gore-ifyingly
wonderful!

8th Grade Student Zombie Film - School
of the Dead - posted
6.25.09 at 11pm
What do 3 teachers at a NY middle school do when
they recieve a UFT mini grant? They use the money to integrate
media arts to their creative writing curriculum by having the
students create a zombie short film!
The students at I.S. 145 in Jackson Heights Queens
along with instructors, Jared Beloff, Chad Dictenberg and Chris
McLaughlin have been working on their film, 'School of the Dead'
for about a year and just recently had a red carpet premiere of
the film in NY.
The concept was formed to give the students a unique
opportunity to engage in a collaborative effort by all working
on a high-interest project that they could be proud of. The students
were also able to explore career opportunities in media arts fields
like special effects make-up and storyboarding through consultation
visists to th school by artists.
The students worked on all facets of the production
from drafting original stories and scripts to fundraising and
finally filming and completing the project. Another exciting flip
to this story is that the production was all documented on a blog
by the students which you can read at - The
Zombie Groan Blog The film will also be accompanied by a documentary
of the entire film making process.
This is an inspiring story and who knows, we could
have a young George Romero or Dario Argento on the rise

Film - Invasion of the Not Quite Dead
- posted 6.21.09 @ 1pm
Invasion of the Not Quite Dead is an independently
financed feature film that is part of the IndyWood
Project. An homage of sorts to classic zombie and b-movie
horror, Invasion of the Not Quite Dead sounds like a blast!
"In 1978 a meteorite crash lands into the
Swiss Mountains, unleashing a deadly virus. Killing everyone within
a 20 mile radius, the incident was covered up by local officials.
Now thirty years later the virus is released onto an unsuspecting
island off the coast of England. A group of survivors must band
together in order to survive the death and destruction of the
once friendly locals in this black comedy horror “Invasion
Of The Not Quite Dead.”
As mentioned, the film is being independently financed
and is employing some unique opportunities to have your name credited
as a producer through some sponsorship options. You even have

Zombie Film - The Eaters
- posted 6.11.09 @ 10pm
I got invited to the NY premiere of The Eaters and
I'd just about sell my left leg to go because this looks absolutely
hilarious...
"A Brooklyn band, General Malacarne is practicing
when once again, the power goes out. Little do they know that
this blackout is unlike any other, and that while they relax and
smoke up in the basement, everyone above ground has been transformed
into vicious, undead eating machines."
DEAD MEAT - Serial Zombie Fiction
Blog Review and Interview! -posted
6.7.09
After running this site for quite some time now,
I read a lot of zombie fiction and there is a lot of it that is
mind-numbingly dull...Not the case with the serialized zombie
fiction blog DEAD MEAT which documents the tale of two survivor's
in the small town of River's Edge which has a Bee problem, 'Bee'
is the nickname given to the zombies because they travel in swarms.
DEAD MEAT is written by brothers Chris and Patrick Williams who
definitely have a great story on their hands. We got a chance
to speak with the guys so read on for our review and interview!
Valve
Officially Annouounces Left 4 Dead 2! -
posted 6.1.09 @ Noon
June 1, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game
franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading
technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Left
4 Dead 2 (L4D2), the sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaimed
co-operative multiplayer thriller.
Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises
to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become
one of 2009's marquee titles.
"A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008's
top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored
gameplay made possible by the AI Director," said Gabe Newell,
president and co-founder of Valve. "With the knowledge gained
from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team,
L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games."
Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee
combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such
as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.
Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic
gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the
ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects,
and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects,
and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a
unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and
uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.
Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons,
and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original
with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps
for Survival mode available at launch.
Supported by a $10+ million marketing campaign,
Left 4 Dead has sold over 2.5 million retail copies since it was
released in November of 2008. Left 4 Dead 2 is targeted for release
on Xbox 360 and the PC on November 17, 2009, and will be launched
worldwide with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign across
TV, Outdoor, and Online.
"Left 4 Dead was backed by our most aggressive
advertising campaign to date, and resulted in a top 5 showing
on two platforms during holiday 2008," said Doug Lombardi,
VP of marketing at Valve. "Left 4 Dead 2 is a larger game
and will be supported with even more consumer and retail advertising
programs than the original."
Left 4 Dead 2 will be featured as the cover story
on PC Gamer and Official Xbox Magazines this month. For more infomation,
